National Update

Dear Log Cabin Republican,

Last Tuesday Log Cabin Republicans hosted the 2011 Spirit of Lincoln Awards Dinner, which was a resounding success. On the day that the failed and unconstitutional 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' policy finally found its place on the ash heap of history, we honored repeal champion Senator Susan Collins, who delivered a moving speech, available on our website. Also receiving the Spirit of Lincoln Award were Senator Scott Brown, Representative Richard Hanna and Representative Nan Hayworth. In addition to honoring Senator Brown we also announced our official endorsement of his re-election in 2012. With hundreds of members, friends and allies in attendance, it was a night to remember. Click here to see more photos from the events.

As the book closes on DADT, it is time to turn our eyes to the next step in our march toward freedom and fairness for all Americans. Log Cabin Republicans are deeply proud to announce the support of longtime ally Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen for the Respect for Marriage Act, which will repeal the so-called 'Defense of Marriage' Act. We are grateful to have such a strong leader and consistent ally as the first Republican co-sponsor of this bill and look forward to others following her example.

Log Cabin Republicans are constantly mindful of the many hardships facing everyday Americans, from high unemployment to a challenging economy. Earlier this month Republicans won a special election in New York. In a district where registered Democrats outnumber Republicans 3 to 1, this is a clear warning to the White House and Democrat controlled Senate that Americans will not stand for gridlock on important issues. Log Cabin Republicans have met with Turner and look forward to working closely with his office.

Log Cabin Republicans are on a roll and the future is bright. If you like what you see and want to truly be a part of achieving results, I urge you to get involved and consider becoming a Log Cabin Republicans Trustee. Trustees get the inside scoop on Log Cabin's work, access to special events with VIPs and National Staff, and most importantly, serve as the backbone of this organization. We have come a long way, and together, we can take the next step toward equality for all. Onward and upward!

Sincerely,

R. Clarke Cooper
Executive Director

Issue in Focus: Respect For Marriage

We are proud to announce that Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen has become the first Republican co-sponsor to sign onto the 'Respect For Marriage Act.' This bill seeks to overturn the so-called 'Defense of Marriage Act,' which denies access to federal benefits like social security for legally married same-sex couples. Representative Ros-Lehtinen is the Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and one of the founding members of the House LGBT Equality Caucus. Representative Ros-Lehtinen she spoke at this year's Spirit of Lincoln PAC reception.

Anti-gay special interest groups including the Family Research Council and the National Organization for Marriage have already put Ros-Lehtinen in their sights. Help Log Cabin Republicans fight back to defend our allies today!
