National Update

Dear Supporter,

As Log Cabin Republicans recognizes LGBT Pride across the country, I would like to underscore how proud I am to be your executive director. We are all proudly gay, but we are also proudly Republican, and together we will work together for a stronger, more inclussive America.

This week I had the opportunity to hear from Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, who laid out the case for how the GOP was going to retake the White House. In our conversations, he made a point to thank us for the role not only part of the broader conservative messaging platform, but in the work we do to elect Republicans at all levels.

Now is an important time for Log Cabin to be at the table, not only as the focus turns to Presidential candidates, many who have underscored their support for equality on non-discrimination, marriage equality, repeal of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell,' and especially with LCR member, Fred Karger in the race. We've also seen allies like Richard Hanna and Nan Hayworth taking the lead in reversing anti-business tax penalties on domestic partner health benefits. In this effort we've been joined by corporate allies American Airlines, Dow Chemical and MassMutual. There is much more for us to do keep up the fight for equality, and ensure that our government returns to commonsense conservative principles.

While we have seen our allies in Congress increase in steady numbers, Democrats have once again determined that being a pro-equality Republican makes you a prime target for defeat. Log Cabin Republicans needs your help in ensuring these champions will continue to stand with us. Contribute to Log Cabin Republicans Political Action Committee to ensure that leaders like Judy Biggert, Scott Brown, and Mark Kirk stay in Washington.

Sincerely,

R. Clarke Cooper
Executive Director

Issue in Focus: Debt & Deficits

It is hard to open the newspaper, turn on the radio or watch the news without hearing about the out of control debt and deficits in Washington. I was watching former Congressman Joe Scarborough who reminded everyone that the debt is about to reach 100 percent of our Gross Domestic Product, and our leaders in Congress must address in short haste. Speaker Boehner and the Republican leadership are making sure spending cuts are at the top of every agenda, while Democrats want to kick the can down the road.

Issue in Focus: DOMA

The begining of the end for the so-called 'Defense of Marriage Act,' is coming, and that is recognizable on so many levels. It is not just that the courts are recognizing its infringement upon states rights. It is also the fact that one-time champions of the legislation, including its author, Bob Barr, who spoke at Log Cabin Republicans National Convention about why it needs to be eliminated because gays and lesbians have the fundamental right to marry. Most importantly I can see its demise because our leaders in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force recognize that gay and lesbian servicemembers should not be denied the same benefits and rights of all of their colleagues.

  • Log Cabin Republicans of Minnesota fought hard to try to keep a constitutional amendment banning marriage equality off the Minnesota ballot in 2012. Members of the chapter were constantly at the state capitol, lobbying lawmakers and making the case why this amendment is bad policy, and bad politics for Minnesota Republicans. The chapter mounted an e-mail campaign that delivered more than 10,000 emails from concerned Republicans to the GOP caucus, secured extensive media coverage, and through an effective use of social media were able to help turn out crowds at the capitol day after day.

Their efforts ultimately secured four votes on the State House floor in opposition to the marriage amendment. If you haven't seen the videos of Rep. John Kriesel and Rep. Tim Kelly speaking out, it is must-see material - you will be inspired. It unfortunately wasn't enough to win this time around, but Log Cabin Republicans can be proud and confident that we are well represented by our chapter in Minnesota, and that they will continue to fight hard to convince conservatives, libertarians and independents in MN to vote against this anti-family, anti-freedom amendment in 2012.
