Log Cabin—Colorado Denounces Comments by GOP Candidate for Lieutenant Governor

Janet Rowland Using the Politics of Fear to Divide Voters

(Denver, CO)— Log Cabin Republicans of Colorado denounce the inappropriate comments recently made by the GOP candidate for Lieutenant Governor.  “These comments, made by Janet Rowland, do not represent the views of mainstream Republicans.” said Adam Crowley, President of Colorado Log Cabin Republicans,

On the March 17th broadcast of Rocky Mountain PBS “Colorado State of Mind”, Rowland said, “Homosexuality is an alternative lifestyle? For some, bestiality is an alternative lifestyle. Do we allow a man to marry a sheep?”

“As a Republican, I am disappointed that GOP Gubernatorial candidate Bob Beauprez has chosen someone who uses the politics of fear to divide the Colorado electorate,” said Crowley.  “Bob Beauprez, the Republican Party, and the voters of Colorado should not support such an uneducated view of an important part of the American family.”

“Hundreds of thousands of law-abiding tax-paying gay and lesbian citizens make invaluable contributions to the quality of life in this great state.  They’re raising families, building stronger communities, creating jobs, paying taxes and working to secure a bright future for Colorado.  Rowland’s statement is offensive, and could not possibly represent the diverse population of Colorado,” said Crowley.

“Rowland’s use of the term ‘alternative lifestyle’ shows an ignorance of basic science.  Countless studies of both humans and animals irrefutably show that human beings don’t choose their sexual orientation,” said Log Cabin Executive Vice President Patrick Sammon.  “Unfortunately, enemies of science, fact, and common sense continue misrepresenting the truth by using terms such as ‘alternative lifestyle.’  We know more about the genetic causes of sexual orientation than we do about the genetic origins of handedness, but we don’t say someone chooses the ‘left-handed alternative lifestyle.’”

Denver, CO –  Two Colorado political groups representing the interests of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community, one Democrat, the other Republican, praise the actions of the state legislature on Monday in passing the Employment Non-Discrimination Act.  In response to the passage of Senate Bill 05-28, the Colorado Stonewall Democrats and the Colorado Log Cabin Republicans urge Governor Owens to sign this bill into law.  This legislation fills a void in our state’s civil rights laws, extending the protection against employment discrimination to include sexual orientation and gender variance.  This is the same protection that is currently afforded to Coloradans based on gender, race, age and religion.

Dan Merritt-LeSatz, President of the Colorado Log Cabin Republics notes that “In the event that this bill becomes law, it will be a greater level of equality for GLBT Coloradoans.  Therefore, I strongly urge fair-mindedness as this bill moves through the legislative process.” In addition, Paul McCarty, Communications Director of the Colorado Stonewall Democrats stated that “Currently Colorado is one of forty-four states where it is legal to fire someone based on their sexual orientation or gender identity, and Governor Owens has the opportunity to move Colorado forward as a state that believes in civil rights for all people.”

Colorado Stonewall Democrats are the Initiative within the State Party which speaks for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender ("GLBT") community, educates the Party on issues of importance to the GLBT community, and reaches out from the Party to the GLBT community.  With members statewide, including many people active at the city and county level, we reach out to GLBT voters who have not yet become politically organized because they live in smaller communities.

Log Cabin Republicans stand for the proposition that all of us are created equal-worthy of the same rights to freedom, liberty, and equality.  The mission of the Log Cabin Republicans is to work within the Republican Party to advocate equal rights for all Americans, including gays and lesbians.  This effort will help secure full equality for gays and lesbians. Plus, it will create a stronger, larger, and more unified GOP, leading to the election of more fair-minded Republican candidates to public office at all levels of government.

Colorado Log Cabin Republicans honors Tim Gill

On December 7th, during its inaugural holiday event, Colorado Log Cabin Republicans honored the contributions of renowned philanthropist Tim Gill.  A custom-made snowboard was given to Mr. Gill.  Though not a Republican himself, Gill is a philanthropist who cares passionately about many issues. Through both his philanthropy and socially conscious business practices, Tim is setting a powerful example by valuing all people for their unique talents, backgrounds and skills. Through the Gill Foundation, Tim provides millions of dollars annually to gay and lesbian and HIV/AIDS organizations along with other charitable causes.  Most recently, Gill’s contributions most notably consisted of having funded local airtime for an anti-Federal Marriage Amendment commercial, which was produced by the national headquarters of Log Cabin Republicans.  This commercial was aired within swing-states earlier in the year.

The event was hosted by CLCR members Jim Rhye and Tom Lorz, at their home in the 100 block of Lafayette St., in Denver.  Additionally, CLCR was honored to have the presence of Patrick Guerriero, executive director of the Log Cabin Republicans.

A successful software entrepreneur, and one of only two openly gay individuals on the 1997 Forbes 400 list.  As founder and former Chairman and Chief Technology Officer of Quark, Inc., a successful desktop and internet software company, Tim was recognized as an innovative business leader in America. Tim founded Quark, Inc. in 1981 with a $2,000 loan from his parents, and worked to build Quark into a leading developer of page layout software for the high-end graphics market. Tim lives in Denver, Colorado.

Patrick C. Guerriero, a former mayor, state representative, and candidate for lieutenant governor from Massachusetts, has devoted his career to public service. This son of a working-class family from a blue-collar city has earned a reputation as a dedicated, effective and compassionate public servant.

As a Republican, Guerriero has championed issues important to all citizens - lower taxes, smaller government, improved public schools, safer neighborhoods and equal rights. In addition, he has advocated for anti-hate-crimes legislation and AIDS funding, as well as expansion of domestic partnership benefits.

Guerriero is a skilled candidate who has never lost an election, having won three

terms for state representative and two terms for mayor of Melrose, Massachusetts, which is his hometown. He is also a dedicated Republican activist and political adviser to past and present Massachusetts’ governors, including Governors William Weld, Paul Cellucci, and Jane Swift, as well as Governor-elect Mitt Romney.
