 2004 National Convention

The 2004 Log Cabin Republicans National Convention in Palm Springs, California brought together hundreds of loyal Republicans, united by a common vision of fairness and freedom.  The largest and most successful convention in Log Cabin's history included fair-minded, conservative gay and lesbian people, along with our straight allies from all over the nation. The weekend of strategy sessions, speeches, and socializing sent an important message about the future of the GOP—inclusion wins!

Log Cabin's convention was held in conjunction with the Liberty Education Forum (LEF) National Symposium.  LEF educates people about the importance of achieving freedom and fairness for all Americans.  The 2004 National Symposium highlighted some of the key issues facing our community.  Speeches touched on the importance of gaining basic protections for gay and lesbian families. The symposium also included a distinguished panel discussion on the critical issues related to HIV/AIDS.  Several speeches focused on the military's don't ask, don't tell policy.  Speakers included noted conservative author and commentator Andrew Sullivan.  Also, Rob Compton and David Wilson shared their experience as one of the plaintiff couples in the historic Goodridge marriage equality case in Massachusetts.  Plus, openly gay Brigadier General Keith Kerr, CSMR (Ret.) shared his experience as a retired high ranking military officer.

Log Cabin's Convention included a panel discussion on our efforts to defend the Constitution.  People at the convention greeted former Congressman Michael Huffington with a standing ovation as he spoke out against the anti-family Federal Marriage Amendment.  He pledged another $100,000 for Log Cabin's campaign to defend the Constitution.    People at the convention also discussed strategy for responding to the anti-family Constitutional amendment.  And we engaged in an important dialogue about this summer's endorsement decision in the Presidential race.  We also found time to relax and enjoy some sun and fun.

Log Cabin's National Dinner included a keynote address by Republican Senator Gordon Smith.  This courageous Oregon lawmaker represents the future of the GOP.  His speech at the convention shows how much progress Log Cabin has made in building an inclusive GOP.  Our work to transform the party is not finished, however the 2004 Log Cabin Republicans National Convention is further proof that we will be successful.  Freedom and fairness will prevail over intolerance and discrimination.
