Log Cabin Launches Marriage Equality Effort
It is a critical time in the
fight for marriage equality in New York.
On April 16, 2009,
Governor David Paterson introduced his program bill to recognize
the right of gay and lesbian New Yorkers to marry.
On April 17, 2009,
strong Log Cabin ally and Republican Assemblywoman Janet Duprey
(R-North Country) called a press conference to explain how her
views had evolved on the issue and that she would vote YES for
marriage equality this year, while Senate
Republicans signaled that some of their colleagues could
vote YES.
And on April 20, 2009,
Republican Senate Minority Leader Dean Skelos (R-Long Island)
stated that although he opposes marriage equality, members of
the Senate Republican Conference will be free to vote their
consciences. Mayor Rudy Giuliani, a potential candidate for
governor, said he respects a conscience vote and that the GOP
should focus on the economy, not social issues, to regain power
in state government. "The Republican Party is best to organize
itself around economic issues and issues of national security;
we end up getting back to being a majority party that way,"
Giuliani said.
Republican Assembly Minority Leader Brian Kolb has also
indicated that his conference will remain neutral on marriage
equality, recognizing significant support for the bill within
the GOP. You may also want to check out these recent articles: The Advocate, New York Marriage Bill Gets GOP Boost New York Times, New York Senators Hedge on Gay Marriage New York Daily News, Gay Marriage Gets Another Assembly Republican The Advocate, NY Republican Supports Marriage Equality
