We're sorry, this alert is no longer available. If you would like to learn more about ways you can take action, please visit Log Cabin Republicans of New York State. The short explanation of this alert was:
In April, Governor David Paterson introduced his program bill to recognize the right of gay and lesbian New Yorkers to marry.
Shortly thereafter, strong Log Cabin ally and Republican Assemblywoman Janet Duprey (R-North Country) called a press conference to explain how her views had evolved on the issue and that she would vote YES for marriage equality this year, while Senate Republicans signaled that some of their colleagues could vote YES.
Finally, Republican Senate Minority Leader Dean Skelos (R-Long Island) stated that although he opposes marriage equality, members of the Senate Republican Conference will be free to vote their consciences. Mayor Rudy Giuliani, a potential candidate for governor, said he respects a conscience vote and that the GOP should focus on the economy, not social issues, to regain power in state government. "The Republican Party is best to organize itself around economic issues and issues of national security; we end up getting back to being a majority party that way," Giuliani said.
